The reason why Creative will never win

Monday, Oct. 18, 2004, 8:26 p.m.

Check out Creative's latest attempt to beat the iPod:

And compare it to this:

Hmm... why does the Zen Micro's main menu look so familiar? How about the navigation system? Hmm... "Play/Pause","Next", "Previous", "Menu", "Back". How about the buttons? A Synaptics capacitive button too? Wait, comes in different colours?

C'mon, Creative, you can do better than that! First of all, "Zen Micro"? Sounds like their version of the "iPod Mini". And now they have the same buttons too? Tell you something, the iPod's "Menu" button does what "Menu" and "Back" can do on the Zen Micro. Real original, Creative. They even had to use the EXACT technology for the buttons too! Sheesh! Whatever happened to "Be original"?

Here's why Creative will never win:

Steve Job's view on competition:
"Q: With the iPod, Apple moved beyond the PC into consumer electronics. But you're still considered a niche player that picks its spots in bigger markets. Will you try to expand to become a more full-line player, like a Sony or Samsung?
A: The fact that you're comparing us to Sony is a statement in itself. I'm flattered. We really respect those guys and what they've accomplished over the years. But we're just trying to make great products. We do things where we feel we can make a significant contribution. That's one of my other beliefs."

Sim Wong Hoo's view on competition:
"Mr Sim Wong Hoo, Creative's chief executive officer, promised to come out with 'guns blazing' in what he called a war, and said his company would 'take no prisoners'.

'We have learnt a lot of painful lessons in the MP3 market after being overtaken by Apple.
'We have the technology with better audio quality, but we lost out on marketing. We didn't shout about it. For example, our battery life is much longer than Apple's gadgets.'"

A great man once said "You don't compete, only create". As you can see, from the Zen Touch all the way to the Zen Micro, Creative has been putting effort to beat Apple, not make better products for consumers. If this goes on, Creative will NEVER win. Learn from Steve, Wong Hoo!

Here's a quote from the Zen Micro press release: "There's no need to go round in circles with the ZEN MICRO’s intuitive Vertical Touch Pad. Designed to let you easily navigate through your music, you can be sure to find any song or data file with ease." First of all, one of the iPod's favourite feature IS the circular scroll. Special accelerating scroll which is sensitive to your speed beats moving your fingers up and down all the time. Admit defeat, Creative! War is never a good thing. Not even when it comes to this. Whoever declares war usually loses.
